MCT is seeking one actor for the role of The Legionnaire in What the Constitution Means to Me.

About the Play

What the Constitution Means to Me is an acclaimed, autobiographical play written by playwright and performer Heidi Schreck. It is a deeply personal exploration of the U.S. Constitution, tracing its profound and often fraught impact across four generations of women in Schreck's family.

Available Role(s)

The Legionnaire (Male, 40-60)
An American Legion contest official who presides over Heidi’s teenage constitutional debate. The role requires clarity, authority, comic timing, and the ability to maintain the contest's structure while also allowing the play's deeper tensions to emerge. This actor should be comfortable engaging with the audience and moving between formal public presentation and more human, immediate moments.

The play itself asks for a living, present relationship with the audience, so we are looking for an actor who can be precise with text while remaining responsive and alive in the room.

Casting Information

  • NON-UNION actors only

  • Male-presenting actors only

  • All ethnicities are encouraged to audition

Compensation & Housing

  • Pay rate: $18/hour

  • Guaranteed minimum: $1,200 total

  • Estimated weekly pay: $200/week over 6 weeks

  • Housing available for actors traveling 50+ miles

  • Travel stipends available

  • All paid actors must submit W-4 and I-9 forms

Rehearsal & Performance Schedule

Rehearsals:

  • July 20 – August 6, 2026

  • Rehearsals are typically held Monday through Saturday, 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • Location: 580 S Algiers St, Murphys, CA

Performances:

  • Production runs August 7 – 30, 2026

  • Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM

  • Sundays at 2:00 PM

  • Additional performances:

    • Tuesday, August 11 at 7:30 PM

    • Wednesday, August 12th at 12 PM

Audition Instructions

In-Person Auditions:

  • By appointmenton July 11 and 12, 6-9 pm

  • Location: The Black Bart Playhouse, 580 S Algiers Street, Murphys, CA 95247

Remote Submissions:

  • Deadline: July 12, 2026

  • We are accepting remote auditions for the role of Legionnaire. Submissions must be self-tapes of the provided sides. You can download the sides HERE.
